Mildred L. Middleton will always be a teacher. She has dedicated her life to teaching others. Mildred is best known for being a teacher's teacher having spent over fifty years in teacher development.

Mildred recalled, "I thought why not continue my work in some way. I've worked so hard in Iowa to develop teacher education. I want it carried on."

Her commitment to education led to her decision to do something that would have a lasting impact on teacher education. Plus, she wanted to make sure family members were provided for.

Through planned gift arrangements, Mildred created the Mildred Middleton Endowment Fund for Excellence in Education. The income from the Endowment Fund will support programs impacting teacher training in the College of Education.

"I've seen many education colleges. UNI is the best I've ever seen for teacher education. The College is truly visionary in the development of programs for training students to teach children," Middleton said.

Together with her financial planner, attorney, and Bill Calhoun from the UNI Foundation, Mildred created a charitable remainder trust. She transferred assets to the trust, giving her an immediate charitable gift deduction for tax purposes.

The trust provides lifetime income to her family members. At the end of the trust, the trust assets transfer to the UNI Foundation to create Mildred's Endowment Fund.

Based on the guidelines she set up, Mildred is assured her gift will benefit those she has designated.

In addition to the trust, Mildred added to her original gift by creating a bequest to UNI in her will and establishing several charitable gift annuities. The combination of these gifts will make a difference by having a lasting impact in teacher education; just like Mildred has.

"UNI has been good to me, assisting me in countless ways. What I've done will be ongoing so that teachers can benefit from what I accomplished during my career."
