Calleta and Paul Koefoed of Cedar Falls both had strong associations with education and the University of Northern Iowa. Paul's ties to UNI began early. His mother received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Normal School, and he attended campus school (now Price Laboratory School).
Calleta, who received a B.A.-teaching in 1966 and a M.A.Ed. in counseling in 1970 from UNI, retired in 1982 after 16 years of teaching kindergarten at Black Hawk School in Waterloo. She said as a kindergarten teacher she felt she influenced the present and the future of education through her students and through the UNI practice teachers she worked with in her classes.
"We always stressed education and all the children value the part their educations have played in their achievements," Calleta said. All three of the Koefoeds' children have degrees and two studied at UNI.
Paul, who worked for Deere and Company from just after World War II until his retirement, took courses at UNI in 1967 to upgrade his skills for quality control work. He said UNI professors waived prerequisites and scheduled night classes to enable him and several others to take the needed computer and business classes.
Through the establishment of two charitable gift annuities, the Koefoeds created an endowed scholarship fund, which will bear their names, for academic scholarships. Paul passed away in the fall of 2004; however, through their scholarship fund, the Koefoeds' belief in education and re-education as keys to success will continue on in future generations of UNI students.
